As with any large social and cultural communication medium, there have been unforeseen consequences to blogging. Defamation and liable issues have been raised and brought to the courts around the globe. The main issue is that blogging can be done anonymously and postings made that are incorrect and damage the party they are referring to. As yet it is still an unresolved matter and the success of cases brought to court is not guaranteed.
Blogging has also led to employment issues. Many bloggers have found themselves without work due to the contents of their blog being read by their employers and being considered inappropriate for an employee of the company.
Political issues have been raised about blogging as they are basically uncontrollable by a government. It is mainly in countries under totalitarian and authoritarian regimes that situations have occurred where individuals have made negative comments about the government and have found themselves arrested and imprisoned.
Finally there is the issue of personal safety. It is normal that a blog is anonymous however this is not a failsafe assurance. Trolls can post frightening and threatening remarks on blogs and there have been cases of individuals fearing for their own safety due to these aggressive posts. Such behavior has now instituted a Bloggers Code of Conduct. The code asks people to take responsibility not just for what you write but also what’s written by others, to ignore trolls, to consider eliminating anonymous comments and other such ideas aimed at protecting the blogging community. However this is purely a code of choice and does not offer any safety against threatening remarks against a blog. |
